How to build founder lists for recruiting and sales

Feb 5, 2025

Founder lists are one of the highest-leverage uses of startup data: they power recruiting, partnerships, and sales. But building them from scratch is painful if the data is messy or scattered. Here’s a simple way to do it well.

Start with the right data

You need founder names, titles, and—when possible—links (LinkedIn, Twitter, company page). If that’s already in one structured dataset, you skip the “find and normalize” step. You can filter by company type, industry, or region and get a list that’s consistent and exportable.

Define your criteria

Recruiting lists might focus on technical founders or operators in a specific industry. Sales lists might target decision-makers at companies of a certain size or stage. Write down who you want (role, segment, geography) and use filters to match. Structured data makes this repeatable: same criteria, same process, every time.

Export and enrich (if you need to)

Export your filtered list to CSV or your CRM. If you use other tools for enrichment or sequencing, a clean export means fewer errors and less manual cleanup. Some teams run the list through their existing outreach stack; others use it as a one-off research or hiring list.

Keep it updated

People change roles and companies. If your data source is updated regularly, you can refresh your lists periodically instead of rebuilding from zero. That’s the main advantage over one-time scrapes or static spreadsheets: lists stay useful over time.
